O Canada: Catch a Glimpse wins Breeders’ Cup Fillies Juvenile Turf

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Catch a Glimpse won the $1-million Juvenile Fillies Turf, giving Canadian trainer Mark Casse his first Breeders’ Cup victory.

The hard-fought win for the two-year-old on Friday at Keeneland snapped Casse’s 0-for-25 drought at the Breeders’ Cup.

“This game is about dreams,” Casse said at the post-race news conference. “When you a buy a horse, the dream is always the Breeders’ Cup, the Kentucky Derby, those kinds of races.”

Catch a Glimpse pressed the pace set by Ruby Notion and held off a late run from 5-2 favourite Alice Springs by three quarters of a length.

Casse, who’s based at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, said he was confident going into the race until he saw that Wesley Ward-trained Ruby Notion was in the field.

Catch a Glimpse’s victory in the Natalma Stakes at Woodbine gave Casse that confidence, and he told people she was the best winner of that race he ever had.

“When did I really think we could win the Breeders Cup? After she was so impressive in the Natalma,” Casse said. “I wanted her to show me she was that good.”

Two Casse-trained horses came up short earlier in the Breeders’ Cup, as Airoforce finished second in the Juvenile Turf and Conquest Daddyo was 14th in that same race.

Casse said it took a while to win the Queen’s Plate at Woodbine.

“Watch out we’re just getting started now,” he said.

Florent Geroux was aboard, improving his Breeders’ Cup record to 2-for-2. It was the third straight win for Catch a Glimpse, her first victory outside Canada. She paid $14.80, $7 and $5.80.

Alice Springs returned $5.80 and $4, while Nemoralia paid $9.20 to show.

The time was 1:39.08 for the mile over the yielding course.
