With Bernier injured, Reimer to start for Maple Leafs against Stars

TORONTO – James Reimer is getting a surprise start in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Dallas Stars.

Indications from the morning skate were that Jonathan Bernier would be in net for the third straight game, but coach Mike Babcock said it would be Reimer.

“Bern’s got bumped in last game, isn’t feeling as good, so we’re going to go with Reimer,” Babcock said Monday morning.

Babcock added that Bernier is healthy enough to serve as Reimer’s backup.

Bernier allowed four goals on 32 shots in a 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night in the second half of back-to-back games.

This season, Bernier has a 3.02 goals-against average and .899 save percentage.

Reimer (3.24 GAA, .876 save percentage) gets his first start since Oct. 26 when he gave up four goals on 24 shots in a loss to the Arizona Coyotes.
