Ex-student at Winston-Salem State charged in weekend killing of student on campus

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A 21-year-old former student was charged Monday with murder in the shooting death of a student near dormitories on the Winston-Salem State University campus, police said.

Jarrett Jerome Moore was charged with murder in the death of 19-year-old Anthony White Jr. of Charlotte, who was killed early Sunday, Winston-Salem police Capt. Catrina Thompson said at a news conference. Police would not answer questions about whether Moore would be charged in the wounding of a second student who was released from the hospital Sunday.

Charlotte authorities had arrested Moore for outstanding warrants unrelated to the WSSU homicide investigation, and he was taken into custody in Charlotte after a short foot chase, she said. Winston-Salem police then charged Moore with murder and possession of a weapon on campus in connection with White’s death, Thompson said.

The shooting was reported about 1:20 a.m. Sunday at a parking lot near two dormitories. The campus was locked down for more than three hours.

White was studying information technology and was an accomplished football player at Belton-Honea Path High School in Honea Path, South Carolina, his mother, Xavier Martin, said Sunday. He wanted to focus on his studies rather than try for a spot on the college team, she said.

On his Facebook page, school Chancellor Elwood Robinson described Anthony as being “excited and enthusiastic about his future.”

“He frequently shared inspirational messages on social media and was looking forward to a bright future after earning his degree at WSSU,” Robinson wrote. “The loss of such a bright young man is truly tragic.”
