Poulin named Canadian women’s hockey team captain for Four Nations Cup

Marie-Philip Poulin has been named captain of the Canadian women’s hockey team for the Four Nations Cup.

Canada opens defence of its title at the annual international women’s hockey tournament Wednesday in Sundsvall, Sweden, against Finland.

Poulin served as captain at the 2015 women’s world championship in Malmo, Sweden, where Canada took the silver medal.

The 24-year-old forward from Beauceville, Que., scored the equalizer and overtime goal in a gold-medal victory over the United States in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Poulin also scored both goals for Canada in a 2-0 win over the Americans in the 2010 women’s Olympic hockey final.

Meghan Agosta of Ruthven, Ont., Toronto’s Natalie Spooner and Lauriane Rougeau of Beaconsfield, Que., will be Canada’s alternate captains.

Canada meets the U.S. on Thursday and host Sweden on Saturday. The final is Sunday.
