They know how it got there but West Kelowna still doesn’t know who owns abandonded hulk in Gellatly Bay

WEST KELOWNA – Bylaw enforcement is still trying to contact whoever owns an overturned metal hulk found tied to a bouy in Gellatly Bay on Wednesday.

Communications supervisor Kirsten Jones says the only thing that’s become more clear is how the metal object got there.

“We got to the bottom of it. Peachland Fire Rescue was called to do a marine rescue when boaters observed a large abandoned, partially submerged vessel floating free,” Jones says. “Peachland Fire Rescue determined it was a navigable hazard and towed to to a nearby safe place, Gellatly Bay and tied it to a bouy.”

Jones says Peachland was acting under the capacity of the regional emergency program during the marine rescue and as such, the cost of removing the hulk will be covered by the program.

“It’s actually sitting partially on the bottom of the bay. West Kelowna will removed the vessel from Gellatly Bay as soon as possible but with such a large submerged vessel, it’s quite a complex thing to remove it,” Jones says.
