The Latest: Mom praises arrest in stabbing of US airman who helped thwart French train attack

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The latest on the stabbing of a U.S. airman who helped stop a gunman on a French passenger train (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

The mother of a U.S. airman who was hailed as a hero for helping thwart a European terror attack on a train is praising the arrest of a man later accused of stabbing her son near a bar in Sacramento, California.

Joyce Eskel, mother of Air Force Staff Sgt. Spencer Stone, said in a telephone interview that the family is relieved and grateful after police announced the arrest Wednesday of 28-year-old James Tran.

Tran is charged with the attempted murder of Stone, who was stabbed on Oct. 8 during a fight.

Eskel says her son’s injuries were worse than initially reported by doctors.

He was knifed four times, not three as doctors said. She says doctors opened her son’s chest to repair lacerations to his heart and liver and a collapsed lung.

Police in California’s capital say they have arrested a 28-year-old man in the stabbing of a U.S. airman hailed as a hero for helping thwart a European terror attack.

Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone was knifed three times in the torso on Oct. 8 in a fight near a bar in Sacramento. Police Chief Sam Somers Jr. announced Wednesday that James Tran of unincorporated Sacramento County was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide.

The brawl occurred shortly after the 23-year-old Stone left a nightclub where patrons applauded him for helping tackle a gunman with ties to radical Islam on a Paris-bound passenger train in August. Police say the assault had nothing to do with the European terror plot.

Grainy surveillance video from outside a liquor store shows a large man who appears to be Stone fighting a half dozen people at an intersection.
