Report: Bomb attack in southeast Turkey wounds 6 soldiers inside armoured vehicle

ANKARA, Turkey – Kurdish rebels detonated a bomb on a road in southeast Turkey on Tuesday, wounding six soldiers riding inside an armoured military vehicle, Turkey’s state-run news agency reported.

The attack occurred on a road near the mainly Kurdish town of Silvan, where authorities have declared a curfew as security forces battle Kurdish militants. It came a week after the rebels ended a temporary cease-fire.

Also Tuesday, one soldier was killed after Kurdish rebels opened fire on a military convoy in Hakkari province, near Turkey’s border with Iraq, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

None of the soldiers were in any life-threatening condition, Anadolu reported.

Fighting between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and Turkey’s security forces flared up in July, killing hundreds of people and derailing a fragile peace process that had begun in 2012.

Last week, the PKK declared that it was resuming attacks, ending a brief cease-fire it had declared a month ago in a bid to reduce tensions before Turkey’s Nov. 1 election. It cited the government’s “policy of war” and “ongoing attacks” for the halt.

The government had rejected the cease-fire. The ruling party, which won a resounding victory in the election, has vowed to keep up the battle until the PKK disarms and fighters withdraw from Turkey.

The PKK has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey’s southeast since 1984 in a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

The group is considered a terror organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union.
