Canada’s Cyle Larin named Major League Soccer’s rookie of the year

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Canadian Cyle Larin is the winner of Major League Soccer’s rookie of the year award.

The 20-year-old forward from Brampton, Ont., had 17 goals in 27 regular-season matches for Orlando City SC this season.

Larin was the first overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft.

He had four multi-goal games and became the first rookie to register two hat tricks in one MLS season.

Larin is the second consecutive Canadian player to win the award. FC Dallas forward Tesho Akindele, a Calgary native, took the honour in 2014.

The award was voted on by MLS club management, media, and league players. San Jose’s Fatai Alashe was a distant second in the voting.
