Kate weakens to a tropical storm far out in the Atlantic; further weakening expected

MIAMI – Kate has weakened to a tropical storm in the Atlantic far out to sea south of Newfoundland.

The one-time hurricane’s winds had dropped by late Wednesday to 70 mph (110 kph).

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Kate was centred about 455 miles (735 kms) south of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and was speeding northeast at 41 mph (67 kph).

The Center says there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, and Kate should weaken to a post-tropical storm on Thursday.
