West Kelowna shooter charged with attempted murder

WEST KELOWNA – The man accused of shooting a driver multiple times in West Kelowna in early August has been charged with attempted murder for a criminal organization.

Police say Tyrone Reynolds McGee, 29, was on a bicycle at around 10:15 p.m., Aug. 2, when he allegedly met up with a man driving a black BMW on Hudson Road near Highway 97.

The driver, a 48-year-old West Kelowna man who has not been identified, was shot several times, according to police, and struck the suspect with his car when he fled before hitting a light pole.

“The suspect was located by officers along with police service dog Ice hiding in the immediate area and suffering from injuries believed to be non life-threatening in nature,” Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a media release. “The RCMP believe this was a targeted incident not a random attack.”

A hospital employee who contacted iNFOnews.ca says the victim was shot six times – twice in the stomach, once in the right bicep, once in the left forearm and once in each leg.

She also claimed the incident was “gang-related” however RCMP would not confirm that.

This week in Kelowna provincial court — in addition to charges of possessing a firearm while prohibited and other gun-related charges — McGee was charged with attempted murder for a criminal organization.

McGee is also charged with two counts of possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of firearm, possession of firearm contrary to order, attempted murder for a criminal organization, discharge a firearm with intent to wound/disfigure, intentionally discharge a firearm while reckless, possess prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition, possess firearm without licence, possess non-firearm unauthorized and possession of firearm contrary to order.

McGee was convicted of a Whistler assault in 2009, unauthorized use of credit card data in Surrey in 2012 and several breaches out of Langley. A warrant was issued for his arrest in December 2014 out of Port Coquitlam.

He next appears in court on Oct. 3.
