OSHAWA, Ont. – Glenn Howard scored a single in the final end for a 7-6 win over American John Shuster in early play Wednesday at The National.
Howard, from Penetanguishene, Ont., took the lead with a three-ender in the sixth but Shuster pulled even with a single in the seventh end.
The veteran skip had the hammer in the eighth and delivered a takeout with his final throw for the victory. It was the opening game for both teams at General Motors Centre.
In other early matchups, Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson edged Calgary’s Chelsea Carey 6-5 and Edmonton’s Val Sweeting topped Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald 7-6.
Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland outscored Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon 8-7 and Edmonton’s Kelsey Rocque beat Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg 7-2.
Three more round-robin draws were scheduled for later Wednesday.
The National is the second major event on the Grand Slam of Curling schedule this season. The $200,000 bonspiel runs through Sunday.
