Intoxicated teenage girl tries to steal car at knifepoint in West Kelowna, police say

KELOWNA – RCMP say a 14-year-old girl is in custody after she allegedly threatened customers of a gas bar with a knife.

Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a press release police were called to the Shell station in the 2500 block of Main Street just before 9 a.m. today, Sept. 20.

The young girl allegedly threatened a customer at the gas pumps, demanding his car after pulling out a knife. The man was able to jump inside his car and lock the door while his wife retreated to the gas bar where the single clerk on duty locked the door.

O’Donaghey said police arrived to find the young woman “inappropriately dressed” and showing signs of intoxication. When confronted by police, the girl threw the knife at the officers and tried to run away. Police soon caught up with her and arrested her without further incident.

Police say they later learned the girl is also alleged to have threatened a B.C. Transit driver with the knife and slapped him in the face.

The teen girl from Chilliwack remains in custody and is facing possible charges including armed robbery and assault with a weapon.

Police ask anyone with additional information who has not already spoken with investigators to contact West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.

John began life as a journalist through the Other Press, the independent student newspaper for Douglas College in New Westminster. The fluid nature of student journalism meant he was soon running the place, learning on the fly how to publish a newspaper.

It wasn’t until he moved to Kelowna he broke into the mainstream media, working for Okanagan Sunday, then the Kelowna Daily Courier and Okanagan Saturday doing news graphics and page layout. He carried on with the Kelowna Capital News, covering health and education while also working on special projects, including the design and launch of a mass market daily newspaper. After 12 years there, John rejoined the Kelowna Daily Courier as editor of the Westside Weekly, directing news coverage as the Westside became West Kelowna.

But digital media beckoned and John joined Kelowna.com as assistant editor and reporter, riding the start-up as it at first soared then went down in flames. Now John is turning dirt as city hall reporter for iNFOnews.ca where he brings his long experience to bear on the civic issues of the day.
