Tracy Fleury upsets Sherry Middaugh at the National with 6-5 win in extra ends

OSHAWA, Ont. – Tracy Fleury scored a point in the extra end as her rink from Sudbury, Ont., slipped past Sherry Middaugh 6-5 on Wednesday night in Draw 5 of the National curling tournament.

Middaugh, from Coldwater, Ont., tied it with two points in the eighth end to force the extra frame at the Grand Slam of Curling event.

Fleury improved to 1-1, while Middaugh is now 0-1.

Also Wednesday night, Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton downed Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald 7-6. Lawton owns a 1-1 record, while McDonald sits at 0-2.

On the men’s side, Reid Carruthers and his rink from Winnipeg scored a point in each of the final four ends to rally past Glenn Howard 6-3.

Howard, from Penetanguishene, Ont., had built a 3-2 lead after four ends before Carruthers (1-1) went on his tear. Howard’s rink drops to 1-1.

Also in the fifth draw, Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., beat Sweden’s Niklas Edin 9-4 in seven ends. Jacobs’s rink is 2-0, while Edin’s is 0-2.

Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud (2-0) topped Quebec City’s Jean-Michel Menard (0-1) 9-3 in seven ends.
