Diane James resigns as head of UK Independence Party

LONDON – The head of the UK Independence Party, Diane James, has resigned— after a mere 18 days of being in charge.

The surprise move revealed in a statement Tuesday came as James said she had not yet formalized her nomination. The language suggests she never formally took over from predecessor Nigel Farage.

James won the post Sept. 16, but says she didn’t have “sufficient authority” to make the changes she envisioned.

James had promised to turn the fractious party into a political force capable of ensuring Britain’s EU exit is not watered down into “Brexit lite.”

But she had a tough task in stepping in for Farage, a populist who helped propel UKIP from the political fringe to influential power broker. The party appealed to voters concerned about large-scale immigration.
