Crime doesn’t pay in recent Penticton area theft attempts

PENTICTON – Three break and enters and a theft last week resulted in little net gain for the perpetrators, Penticton RCMP report.

Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says police were called to the Murray Buick GM dealership on Westminster Avenue after Penticton Security reported a break and enter into a trailer on the property, overnight Sept. 16. A man found inside the trailer claimed he was only looking for a place to sleep. He was arrested and later released on a promise to appear.

Sometime over the weekend between Sept. 17 to Sept. 18, someone attempted to break into a shipping container at Apex Resort by trying to pull the lock off using chains attached to a vehicle, Wrigglesworth says. The would-be thieves were unsuccessful in removing the lock, pulling the container off its blocks. No entry was gained to the empty trailer.

Thieves also broke into a locked compound located on the west side of Memorial Arena sometime between Sept. 16 and Sept. 17, after removing the gate’s hinge bolts. Six, 30 lbs. propane tanks were reported missing.

On Sept. 15, police stopped a man outside the Skaha Lake 7-Eleven after recognizing him for outstanding warrants. He was also found to be in violation of a court order to stay away from the convenience store. Police found an $80 pair of Nike sweat pants under his jeans. A quick survey of nearby businesses revealed the sweat pants had been stolen from the nearby Sport Chek. The man was held for a court appearance.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
