Weekend events take on a fall flavour in the South Okanagan

PENTICTON – As summer transitions into fall so do weekend activities in the South Okanagan.

The Freak’n Farmer Adventure takes place at Covert Farms in Oliver on Saturday, Sept. 24 throughout the day. The event involves five, 10 and 20 kilometre obstacle course races, including two geared to children between the ages of three and six. There will also be a post-race barbecue and wine tastings provided by the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association, in addition to local breweries present with beer tastings. There will also be live music throughout the day. The race is sold out, but spectator tickets are still available.

Apex Ski Patrol is holding their annual ski swap at the Penticton Curling Club from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Vendors and members of the public can consign their used ski equipment for sale, which is safety inspected and sold for a small commission. Proceeds go to support local volunteer first aid and rescue services on the hill.

The Penticton Kidney Walk happens on Sunday. Registration for the event takes place in Gyro Park at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Susan Keyes at 250-497-5878.

The Oliver stop of the first Canadian tour of the Rat Pack happens on Sunday evening, Sept. 25 at the Frank Venables Theatre in Oliver. The show is a tribute performance of the original Las Vegas Rat Pack of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin.

Steve Arstad

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
