Canadian under-20 soccer team loses to Mexico in first of two friendlies
MEXICO CITY – Canada’s under-20 soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to their Mexican counterparts in a friendly Friday.
The two teams meet again Sunday.
Canada almost went ahead in the first minute when Tristan Borges’ free kick hot the goalpost. But Mexico then scored twice off comer kicks in the 17th and 25th minutes.
Borges signed with Dutch side SC Heerenveen earlier this year.
The Canadian team, under coach Rob Gale, is holding a 10-day camp in Mexico.
The Mexicans have dominated CONCACAF competition at the under-17, under-20 and under-23 levels recently, going undefeated in official CONCACAF since a 2009 loss to Canada in U-20 play.
“We played a very good opposition, as expected,” said Gale. “You could see they have played together a lot.
“In the second half, we got better which was a promising sign. We really restricted the number of chances they created. We need to build off (the game). We will get better, regroup and watch video, and come out stronger in the second game.”
