Police destroy Spanish Civil War bomb off Barcelona beach

MADRID – Police explosives experts have destroyed a Spanish Civil War-era bomb found this weekend in the sea off one of Barcelona*s popular beaches, forcing its evacuation.

The Civil Guard police say the bomb, containing 70 kilograms (155 pounds) of TNT, was taken out some two kilometres (1.2 miles) offshore Monday and safely detonated at a depth of 45 metres.

It was discovered Sunday about 25 metres (80 feet) off the Sant Sebastià beach, lying in three meters (nearly 10 feet) of water. The beach was evacuated in the early afternoon when it was full of people.

Police said the bomb dated from 1936, at the start of the three-year Spanish Civil War.

Finding such decades-old explosive devices is not uncommon in Spain.
