Eight teens injured in a Kelowna rollover

KELOWNA – Eight teenage boys, six of them riding in the box of a pickup, were injured in a single-vehicle rollover in Kelowna on the weekend.

RCMP say the teenagers, ranging in age from 16 to 18, were taken to the hospital with minor to serious injuries following the crash at around 8:02 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24 in the 8400 block of Postill Lake Road northeast of the Kelowna Airport in the Ellison neighbourhood.

While some of the injuries were serious, none were life-threatening, according to a RCMP media release.

"A northbound late model Ford F-150 pickup truck travelling down the centre of the gravel roadway attempted to move to the right to pass an oncoming vehicle when the driver failed to properly negotiate a curve," Cst. Jesse O'Donaghey says in the release. "The pickup truck, which had two passengers inside the cab and six more in the bed of the truck, flipped onto its roof."

O'Donaghey says investigators suspect driver inexperience was a factor in the crash, along with road conditions. The road was wet and slippery at the time of the rollover.
