Rope rescue team saves Kelowna couple and dog trapped in ravine

KELOWNA – Kelowna firefighters rushed to the aid of a couple hiking with their dog in the backcountry who became trapped in a ravine yesterday evening.

Kelowna Fire Department platoon captain Tim Light says in a media release there were no reported injuries to the hikers or their dog.

At about 5:35 p.m., yesterday Oct. 2, the department received a call from the RCMP that two hikers and their dog were trapped in a ravine in Mill Creek Regional Park northeast of the airport.

Firefighters deployed their technical rope rescue team. The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue were on site for the initial search. Search and rescue made initial contact and provided assistance to the rope rescue team.

"When hiking in the backcountry, always make sure someone knows which area you'll be in," Light says in the release.
