UPDATE: Evacuations, standoff end peacefully

KAMLOOPS – A 49-year-old man is in custody following reports of gunfire at a Campbell Creek home last night.

Kamloops RCMP officers, assisted by the South East District Emergency Response Team, blocked off the block of 8000 Grizzly Cres. following reports that a resident set off a firearm at a wall inside the house where another person was home around 11 p.m. last night.

RCMP arrived on scene and made multiple attempts to coax the man out of the home by both phoning him and with the use of a bull-horn.

"He ignored all these efforts," said Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned.

Police were finally able to bring him out with the use of two 'distraction devices'.

Learned said the explosive charges are one of the tools used in these situations.

"It just creates a loud bang," he said.

RCMP are saying the other person in the home immediately left at the time of the reported gunshot.

"There were no injuries incurred by anyone," Learned said.

Ten homes in the area were evacuated during the incident for safety concerns. While the man was reported drinking prior to the event, RCMP continue to investigate what happened in the home. In a press statement released at 10:37 a.m., Learned states when ERT members entered to secure the home and ensure nobody else was inside, they noticed additional firearms and a bullet hole in one wall of the home. The bullet apparently went through the wall and struck the house next door.

Mounties may be recommending firearms-related charges against the male in custody, unknown to police.

"The house itself is now a police scene," Learned said.
