SASKATOON – Australian mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd. is laying off 76 people in Canada.
Most of the people affected work at the company’s office in Saskatoon.
Chris Ryder, head of corporate affairs with BHP Billiton, says lower commodity prices made it a tough year.
Ryder says layoff notices have been delivered and people are to lose their jobs starting this month through to June.
He says BHP doesn’t expect commodity prices to change significantly over the next 12 months.
BHP is studying the feasibility of developing a potash mine called the Jansen project about 140 km east of Saskatoon.
The company said Friday that work on its Jansen project continues. (CKOM, The Canadian Press)
