Ammonia leak at southern Alberta nitrogen plant sends two workers to hospital

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – An ammonia leak at a southern Alberta nitrogen plant has sent two workers to hospital.

CF Industries Holdings says the leak was quickly contained and no hazard exists at the Medicine Hat complex.

A company spokesperson told the Medicine Hat News that the two workers were transported to hospital within about half an hour of the leak.

Their condition is not known.

The company says there are no reports of anyone else inside or outside the plant being affected.

The cause of the leak is still unknown, but occupational health and safety officials will be investigating.

Company officials will continue to monitor the situation.

“Our concern right now is for the individuals affected,” spokesman Dale Moverley said in a release Monday.

CF Industries is based in Deerfield, Ill., and is a global leader in the manufacturing and distribution of nitrogen products to agricultural and industrial customers.
