Derailment blocks hiway north of Whistler, B.C.; no spill, no injuries reported

PEMBERTON, B.C. – A train derailment blocked the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Whistler, B.C., and Pemberton Thursday.

The RCMP say some empty rail cars went off the tracks about eight kilometres south of Pemberton, closing the highway in both directions.

There was some minor damage to a vehicle on the road, but no reports of any injuries.

Because the rail cars were empty there was no cargo spill.

The cause of the derailment is not immediately known and police said the highway would be closed for several hours.
