Apollo Theater and Opera Philadelphia present work on jazz great Charlie Parker
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Apollo Theater and Opera Philadelphia will present the theatre’s first opera in the spring — a work about jazz saxophonist and composer Charlie Parker.
“Charlie Parker’s Yardbird” will premiere at the Harlem theatre April 1 and April 3.
It had its world premiere in June in Philadelphia at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
Tenor Lawrence Brownlee will reprise his role at the Apollo as the bebop genius.
The chamber opera has a jazz-infused score. It’s set at the Birdland jazz club on the day Parker died in 1955.
It’s composed by Daniel Schnyder and conducted by Corrado Rovaris.
In 1950, Parker’s first live performance of his “Charlie Parker with Strings” was presented at the Apollo. It was a bridge between jazz and classical music.
