Polish expert: Wooden figures in famous 15th-century altar in Krakow are in poor shape
WARSAW, Poland – Experts say linden wood figures at the top of a famous 15th-century altar in St. Mary’s church in Krakow are in poor shape and need strengthening.
Jaroslaw Adamowicz, head of a team working to preserve the altar, said Thursday the structure of the wood and the paint has deteriorated.
The giant altar by sculptor Wit Stwosz is one of the finest pieces of Gothic art in Europe and is a major tourist attraction in Krakow. It is undergoing conservation that is expected to costs 13.7 million zlotys ($3.4 million). Experts are now inspecting figures from a structure crowning the altar that represent St. Mary with saints and angels.
Adamowicz said the figures will be cleaned but experts are discussing the best techniques for strengthening them.
