Canadian slopestyle skier Kaya Turski out indefinitely after breaking forearm
BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. – Canadian slopestyle skier Kaya Turski will be out indefinitely after undergoing surgery this week to repair fractures to her left forearm and left middle finger.
The 2013 world champion from Montreal was hurt during a training session Monday in preparation for this week’s Dew Tour event, the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association said Friday in a release. Turski underwent surgery Monday evening at Summit Medical Center in Frisco, Colo.
“We stabilized both of these fractures with plates and screws,” said Dr. Erik Dorf of Vail Summit Orthopaedics. “Her surgery went very well, and in the long term I expect a complete recovery. With regard to shorter-term goals, I am optimistic about Kaya’s return to training and competition this season.
“The exact timing of this will of course depend upon her healing and rehabilitation.”
Turski, 27, recently rejoined the Canadian team after taking an extended break to let some lingering injuries heal. She’s hopeful that she’ll be able to return later this season.
“I’m feeling very optimistic about my recovery,” said Turski. “I was operated on by a great doctor who assured me I’d feel as good as new in no time. I’ve been through minor and major injuries and at the end of the day, this is just an arm. The doctor has given me very optimistic timelines and I’m looking forward to getting back on snow in early 2016 and competing with my teammates.
“My ultimate goal as always is to prepare myself for the next Winter Olympics.”
Turski finished 19th in women’s slopestyle at the 2014 Sochi Games. The 2018 Games will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
