McGregor scores hat trick in Canada’s 7-1 sledge hockey win over host Italy

TURIN, Italy – Canada capped an unbeaten run at the International Ice Sledge Hockey Tournament with a 7-1 victory over host Italy in Saturday’s championship game.

Tyler McGregor of Forest, Ont., scored a hat trick to help Canada to its fifth straight victory. Captain Greg Westlake of Oakville, Ont., had two goals while Bryan Sholomicki of Winnipeg and Brad Bowden of Orton, Ont., added singles.

“I like the way that we came together as a team throughout the week,” Westlake said. “It was a lot of fun to see some players score their first goals, and for our team to get the taste of winning again. We are looking forward to competing next at the World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Bridgewater.”

Gianluigi Rosa had the lone goal for Italy. Dominic Larocque of Quebec City and Corbin Watson of Kingsville, Ont., split the goaltending duties for Canada.

Canada outscored its opposition 38-2 over the five games. Canada’s first game at the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge is set for Jan. 17 against Russia in Bridgewater, N.S.
