Alternative Skaha Lake Park development proposal planned for public meeting

PENTICTON – The public will get a look at a new proposal from the developer trying to build a controversial waterpark on Skaha Lake in Penticton at tomorrow's city council meeting.

The city will be introducing the alternative proposal from Trio Marine Group for the proposed development in Skaha Lake Park and the marina at the meeting tomorrow afternoon, Nov. 1, according to a City of Penticton media release.

Trio Marine Group inked a deal with the city last year to build a waterslide complex at Skaha Lake Park with a multi-year lease on the land.

The issue has since become a contentious one for the city and council, precipitating the formation of the Save Skaha Park Society, several demonstrations by parties opposed and in favour and two lawsuits against the city by residents opposed to the surrender of green space to private enterprise.

Staff will present the proposal for informational purposes only at tomorrow’s meeting, the release says. Another public meeting is planned for the week of Nov. 7 in order to answer people's questions and address their concerns prior to council beginning their debate.

The staff report and other documents will be made available on the city’s website by 1 p.m. tomorrow. The city cautions that due to high public interest in the issue, space in council chambers may be at a premium, noting the meeting will be presented live via a video stream on the city's website.
