Voters in Tofino to choose between two candidates in upcoming mayoral election

TOFINO, B.C. – Voters in Tofino, B.C., will elect a new mayor later this month.

The district has set election day for Jan. 26, with advance voting slated for Jan. 16.

Two candidates, Josie Osborne and George Smith, are in the running to replace Perry Schmunk, who announced his resignation in November.

Tofino has been relying on acting mayors since Jan. 1, when Schmunk’s resignation took effect.

He stepped down saying the hours of his new job conflict with his mayoral duties.

The new mayor will fulfil the remainder of the municipal term, which runs until December 2014.
