LLOYDMINSTER, Sask. – Liam Blackburn scored the lone goal of the shootout to lift the West Kelowna Warriors to a 4-3 victory over the Trenton Golden Hawks on Tuesday in preliminary-round action at the RBC Cup.
Jonathan Desbien had a goal and an assist and Quin Foreman and Brett Mennear also scored for the Warriors (2-1-0), who burst out to an early 3-0 lead before the Golden Hawks mounted their comeback.
Lucas Brown, Quinn Lenihan and Hunter Fargey scored as Trenton (2-0-1) dropped its first game at Canada’s junior-A championship tournament.
West Kelowna’s Keelan Williams made 32 saves for the win.
Golden Hawks goalie Daniel Urbani allowed three goals in 21:10 before being replaced by Jackson McIntosh, who stopped all 15 shots he faced in regulation.
Later Tuesday, the Brooks Bandits edged the host Lloydminster Bobcats 4-3.
Cale Makar, Logan Mich and Derek Lodermeir scored for the Bandits (2-1-0). Noah Bauld and Morgan Messenger replied for Lloydminster (1-0-1).
Round-robin play continues through Thursday.
