The Joffrey Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ playing in Chicago wins Goldstar’s Nutcracker Award

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Joffrey Ballet’s long-running version of “The Nutcracker” has once again won the Goldstar National Nutcracker Award, the third and last time that particular Christmas show will be seen.

Ticket discounter Goldstar said Tuesday that the Chicago-based show beat out more than 106 other “Nutcracker”-themed productions to win the 9th annual audience-favourite prize, which includes a cash prize for its education programs.

For 28 years, The Joffrey Ballet’s production has been a beloved part of Chicago’s holiday season. Conceived and directed by founding artistic director Robert Joffrey, Joffrey’s interpretation of the tale is light and magical, featuring lush sets and costumes. This third win makes The Joffrey Ballet the most decorated show in the competition’s nine years.

The Joffrey’s final run of this “Nutcracker” — next season brings Christopher Wheeldon’s new take on the classic — concludes Dec. 27 at the Auditorium. Wheeldon won a Tony Award for “An American in Paris.”

Voting for the Goldstar National Nutcracker Award is determined by Goldstar members who rate and review “The Nutcracker” productions they recently attended. Previous winners include the Debbie Allen Dance Academy and Boston Ballet.

“There were so many ‘Nutcracker’ productions people loved in cities all across the country, but in the end, The Joffrey Ballet proved to be the crowd favourite,” Goldstar CEO Jim McCarthy said. “We’d like to congratulate the entire cast and crew for their remarkable work.”
