Vernon man urges city to secure park land for future generations

A local area business owner believes the remaining 166 acres of the BX Ranch in north Vernon should be purchased by the City to be used as parkland.

Randy Schellenberg made his presentation to council Tues. afternoon, saying the city had indicated a need to acquire 40 hectares for a new destination park in the Greater Vernon Parks and Recreation 2004 Master Plan.

"Here is a golden opportunity to establish just such a park," Schellenberg told councillors.

If purchased by either the City of Vernon or the North Okanagan Regional District, the $3.2 million parcel of land would offer various all-season recreational uses to the citizens of Vernon, said Schellenberg. It would also link the Mutrie Road dog park with the current BX Ranch Park.

At present, the land is being used to grow alfalfa and is within the ALR. Schellenberg said this is no obstacle, because the ALR allows for the creation of parkland.

Schellenberg noted the purchase should be made before the land is sold to another party, and most likely subdivided into small hobby farms.

"If we act now," he said, "Our grandchildren will thank us."

Council will revisit Schellenberg's proposal at the November 26 council meeting. Until then, council, as well as city staff, will look into the matter and form their decisions.
