RCMP in B.C. getting out the word about scams

THOMPSON-OKANAGAN – RCMP in B.C. are working to spread the word about scams for International Fraud Awareness Week.

Frauds and scams have been targetting people in creative ways over the past year and the RCMP is encouraging all British Columbians to become fraud aware.

RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Annie Linteau says in a media release anyone can fall victim to fraud, adding the best defence against scammers is to educate yourself, do your research before sending money to people and question whether something is too good to be true.

"We encourage everyone to use the resources that are available to learn more about how to protect themselves and their loved ones," Linteau says in the release.

Some of the prominent scams in the Thompson-Okanagan this year include bank account scams, student housing scams at Thompson Rivers University and Canada Revenue Agency phone scams.

For more information on frauds and how to protect yourself, visit The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or the B.C. RCMP website.
