US concerned over missing Chinese legal activist
WASHINGTON – The U.S. State Department is voicing concern over the disappearance of a prominent legal activist who has defended some of China’s most politically sensitive figures.
Katina Adams, a spokeswoman for the department’s East Asia bureau, urged Chinese authorities on Monday to provide information on the whereabouts of Jiang Tianyong (JAHNG tee-ehn-YAWNG) who went missing a week ago and ensure his safe and speedy return to his family.
According to Jiang’s wife, he has not been heard from since Nov. 21 when he went to visit relatives of a detained human rights lawyer.
Jiang was disbarred in 2009 but has continued his activism, recently helping to publicize the plight of lawyers arrested in a government crackdown.
Jiang told Associated Press in June that he feared he could be detained at any moment.
