Provincial funding for affordable housing projects in Kelowna

KELOWNA – More than $18 million in government funding is coming to Kelowna for affordable housing.

The province has selected three organizations and the City of Kelowna to receive a total of $18.4 million for new housing projects, according to a B.C. government medie release. The money is to be used for four projects creating 131 units for low to moderate income households.

The Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society will receive $8.2 million for a 42 unit project, Pathways Abilities Society is getting $3.2 million for a 22 unit project and the Society of Hope will receive $4.56 for the third phase of a housing project with 47 units.

The municipal government is getting $2.4 million to build a 20 unit housing project which will then be turned over to a yet-to-be-determined not-for-profit organization to operate.

B.C. Housing will work with the organizations to help plan the buildings.

"With low rental vacancy rates in Kelowna, these new units will make a big difference to seniors seeking safe, affordable rental housing,” says local MLA Steve Thomson in the release.
