Oilsands midway down pack of top climate villains: Greenpeace study

A new Greenpeace report on the world’s top climate villains places Alberta’s oilsands midway down the pack.

The report ranks the world’s 14 largest energy development proposals in terms of how much greenhouse gases they would ultimately generate.

It finds the top two offending countries, by far, are China and Australia — both because of massive expansions in coal production.

The oilsands don’t appear until fifth spot, which it shares with projects in Iraq and the United States.

Keith Stewart of Greenpeace says it’s important to single out these global energy megaprojects because they are still underway and could be halted.

He says if all 14 developments proceed as planned, there’s no chance the world can keep global warming to under two degrees — the level at which many scientists say is the threshold for catastrophic climate change.
