TORONTO – It appears defender Ahmed Kantari’s time with Toronto FC is numbered.

A source confirmed Monday that the MLS team is in the process of waiving the Moroccan international centre back.

Kantari signed with Toronto in late July, 10 days after former captain and centre back Steven Caldwell announced his retirement.

The former Lens player appeared in 12 games with 10 starts. With little time to adjust, Kantari had an up-and-down entry into the league.

With a full season salary listed at US$345,000, he did not come cheap. That, combined with the acquisition of veteran MLS defender Drew Moor in the off-season, rendered him surplus to requirements.

Toronto also has Polish international Damien Perquis, Nick Hagglund, Eriq Zavaleta and Clement Simonon available at centre back.

Improving defence has been a key off-season goal for Toronto, which conceded a league-worst 58 goals last season.
