Medical examiner IDs 2 adults from family of 4 killed when Ohio home explodes, catches fire

CLEVELAND – A medical examiner has identified the two adults from a family of four who were killed after their northeast Ohio home exploded and caught fire.

The adult victims were identified Tuesday as Northfield Center Township residents Jeffrey and Cynthia Mather. The Summit County medical examiner’s office is still working to confirm the identities of the couple’s 8- and 12-year-old daughters and hasn’t released their names.

Neighbours say the Monday night explosion shook homes throughout the development. The Mathers’ home was enveloped in flames when firefighters arrived minutes later.

Investigators combed through the charred wreckage Tuesday to determine what caused the blast. The local fire chief says it doesn’t appear the blast was caused by a natural gas leak.
