Five circus-inspired fitness feats

VANCOUVER – 1) Svetchka handstand: Convert a basic handstand into the single-armed version by shifting all weight into one arm, lifting the other arm and pressing it against your side.

2) Meat hook: While hanging from a bar, rings or a circus partner’s arms, squeeze your legs together, then raise and twist your legs as a unit to one side. Position your hips at your elbow while still grasping firmly to the bar.

3) Pretzel: While lying on your stomach on the floor, raise both legs up and over your head until balancing on your chest. Move your feet until they are positioned just in front of your face.

4) Duo trapeze with catcher and flyer: One person, the “catcher,” hangs from the trapeze from their hips, wrapping their legs up and around the trapeze rope. The catcher throws, catches and flips the second person, also known as the “flyer.”

5) Cascade: A “base” person stands with feet firmly planted on the ground, bending their arms with their palms upward at the level of their head. A flyer stands in the base’s hands. The base throws the flyer, who performs a half-flip in the air. The base remains in the same position while catching the flyer, who lands in the base’s hands in a handstand.
