NFL’s San Diego Chargers agree to terms with CFL standout linebacker McCoil
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with CFL standout linebacker Dexter McCoil.
The NFL team made the announcement Wednesday on its website.
The six-foot-four, 220-pound McCoil spent the last two seasons with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos.
In 2014, the former Tulsa star was named the CFL’s top rookie after finishing tied for the league lead in interceptions (six, returning three for TDs) with 67 tackles and four sacks.
McCoil had 76 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and a fumble recovery this past season, helping Edmonton capture the Grey Cup.
Last month, the Eskimos announced an agreement that allowed the native of Metairie, La., the opportunity to sign an NFL contract until May 1. If McCoil hadn’t signed a deal by then, he would’ve returned to play with Edmonton for the 2016 and ’17 seasons.
McCoil becomes the third former CFL player to join the Chargers recently, joining receiver Dontrelle Inman (Toronto Argonauts) and linebacker Cordarro Law (Calgary Stampeders).
