The Latest: Flint mayor extends emergency declaration

FLINT, Mich. – The Latest on the city of Flint’s water emergency (all times local):

6:50 p.m.

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver has extended the city’s state of emergency due to its ongoing water crisis.

The mayor said Monday she signed a declaration renewing the order she first issued 11 months ago. The Flint City Council was expected to also OK the renewal at its meeting Monday night.

Federal and state emergency declaration expired in August, though both governments have committed to restoring the drinking water system and continuing to help residents.

Weaver says local, state and federal leaders should support her renewal of the emergency declaration.

She says while the water’s quality is gradually improving, health officials still can’t say it’s safe without a filter and “if that isn’t an emergency I don’t know what is.”

The Obama administration has approved Michigan’s request to spend nearly $24 million annually for five years to eliminate lead hazards from the homes of low-income residents in Flint and other communities.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced its decision Monday. It allows for an amendment to Michigan’s Children’s Health Insurance Program in the wake of Flint’s water crisis.

Michigan would contribute about $330,000 in state money this fiscal year toward $23.8 million in mostly federal spending in Flint and other areas.

Dr. Nicole Lurie, assistant secretary of preparedness and response with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, says it’s an “unprecedented step.”

The funds will be used to address lead risks, including removing lead-based paint and dust hazards and potentially replacing water service lines and fixtures.
