Regina’s Catholic archbishop dies of cancer, had long career in Maritimes

REGINA – Regina’s Catholic community is mourning the loss of the city’s archbishop, who has died after a long battle with cancer.

Archbishop Daniel Bohan was 74.

He began serving as archbishop of Regina in 2005, one of the last appointments of Pope John Paul II.

He was born in Yarmouth, N.S., and grew up in Moncton, N.B.

Ordained in May 1967, the archbishop served in the Maritimes for most of his life.

He was appointed the auxiliary bishop of Toronto in May 2003, and was ordained bishop in July 2003 in his home parish in Moncton.

During his time serving Regina, Bohan worked on building relationships with the Sikh, Hindu and Muslim communities by presenting letters that recognized their religious days.

The archbishop’s mother, Rita, is still living and lives in Moncton.

Vicar General Very Reverend Lorne Crozon will assume the duties of archbishop of Regina until a new archbishop is appointed.
