Van Landeghem, Bouchard lead way as six Canadians reach finals at US Pro Swim Series

AUSTIN, Texas – Chantal Van Landeghem and Dominique Bouchard produced top-five finishes and six Canadians qualified for the finals at the second stop on the U.S. Pro Swim Series event.

Winnipeg’s Van Landeghem came within 0.08 seconds of the podium in the women’s 50-metre freestyle, placing fourth in 24.92 seconds. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden took the gold in 24.17, American Madison Kennedy was second in 24.72 and Missy Franklin of the U.S. placed third in 24.84. Sandrine Mainville of Montreal was eighth.

In the women’s 200 backstroke, Bouchard, of North Bay, Ont., was only a half second from a medal, clocking fifth in two minutes 9.70. American Maya DiRado won in 2:08.19, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary second in 2:08.63 and Franklin third in 2:09.21. Brooklynn Snodgrass of Calgary was eighth.

Markus Thormeyer of Delta, B.C., was sixth in the men’s 200 backstroke and Sydney Pickrem, a Canadian currently based in Florida, was eighth in the women’s 400 individual medley.

The finals are on Sunday.
