New Orleans celebrates David Bowie with second line parade

NEW ORLEANS – The Arcade Fire and Preservation Hall Jazz Band has held a second line parade in New Orleans to memorialize music and fashion icon David Bowie.

Hundreds of fans, many of who came dressed in their best Bowie outfits, marched Saturday in the street with the bands performing Bowie’s music. Bowie, 69, died after a long battle with cancer.

The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/1RN7Av1) says the parade came about in conversations between Preservation Hall creative director Ben Jaffe and Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. By chance, the group of musicians had been rehearsing Bowie’s “Modern Love” together.

“It was a lot of fun to get together and riff on it,” Jaffe said. “That’s the way Bowie would want us to celebrate. He would want people out in the street dancing.”
