Black, Onyshko, Rogers named to Canada’s Olympic gymnastics team

GATINEAU, Que. – Ellie Black of Halifax, Isabela Onyhsko of Brandon, Man., and Brittany Rogers of Coquitlam, B.C., were named to the Canada’s Olympic gymnastics team on Wednesday after the second day of the Rio selection camp.

The three athletes were nominated to the team based on points they had accumulated at several competitions over the last few months, including the 2015 World Championships, 2016 Canadian Championships, 2016 Elite Canada, and the selection camp.

Black and Onyshko accumulated so many points after the first day of competition on Tuesday that their coaches pulled them from Wednesday’s competition.

“We wanted to wait until after the first day to see how that went, and then we knew that Isabela had accumulated enough points and we didn’t want to risk injury with things that have been nagging,” said Onyshko’s coach Lorie Henderson.

Rogers was left to battle it out with the eight other gymnasts vying for spots. She came up big in the uneven bars with a score of 14.800 to finish first all-around, solidifying a top-3 finish.

“I had so many emotions bottled up and after I finished that bars routine, it just all came out,” Rogers said. “I knew as soon as I landed that bar routine that I had a really good shot at making my second Olympics and that’s a dream come true.”

A selection committee will decide the last two spots on the team.
