TSN says account that sent out bogus van Riemsdyk trade alert was compromised
TORONTO – TSN says the Twitter account for its Toronto radio station was hacked after a false trade alert claiming the Toronto Maple Leafs had dealt forward James van Riemsdyk was posted Tuesday.
The tweet from the @TSN1050Radio account, which has 23,400 followers, said the currently injured van Riemsdyk had been traded to the New York Rangers. It was quickly deleted, and the broadcaster sent a follow-up message saying no trade had been made.
“Earlier today our station’s account was compromised. Within minutes, we deleted the initial tweet and retracted what was shared,” TSN said in a statement. “We regret any confusion this may have caused and are taking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
TSN insider Bob McKenzie said on Twitter that an internal memo blamed a hack for the erroneous post.
“If a trade happens, that TSN Radio account is not where news of it would be broken,” McKenzie added.
