Canada’s Samuel Girard wins short-track World Cup gold in season-opener

CALGARY – Canadian short-track speedskater Samuel Girard won gold in the men’s 500 metres at the season-opening World Cup in Calgary on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Ferland-et-Boileau, Que., jumped out to an early lead and held it for his second career World Cup victory in that distance.

Girard was just under two-tenths of a second off the world record on fast ice at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

Wu Dajing of China and reigning Olympic champion Victor Ahn of Russia took silver and bronze respectively.

Marianne St.-Gelais of St.-Felicien, Que., earned silver in the women’s 500 behind winner Kexin Fan of China on the first of two days of competition.

Racing continues Sunday with another 500 metres, the 1,000 metres and the men’s and women’s relays.
