Local politicians wearing many hats could be affected by conflict ruling

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – A B.C. Court of Appeal ruling issued in mid-January is already creating repercussions for at least one local government.

Prince George city councillor Lynn Hall has resigned as a director of the Canada Winter Games Host Society, the group responsible for bringing the 2015 Canada Winter Games to northern B.C.

Hall’s resignation comes after the high court ruled elected local officials are in a financial conflict of interest if, while serving as directors of non-profit societies, they also take part in local government discussions about society finances.

The three appeal court judges found a lower court was too narrow in its ruling that councillors can only be in conflict if they profit directly or indirectly from any talks.

The Union of B.C. Municipalities is reviewing the appeal court decision because of concerns that the UBCM is a non-profit group formed entirely by elected officials who frequently consider financial matters concerning the organization.

In the meantime, Hall says she is leaving her position with the Winter Games Society in an “abundance of caution.” (CKPG)
