Spain: Police arrest 9 suspected members of PKK armed group
MADRID – Police arrested nine suspected members of the Kurdish armed group PKK-KCK that operates in Syria and Turkey in raids in three Spanish cities Wednesday, the Interior Ministry said.
The PKK-KCK is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.
A ministry statement said those arrested included eight Spaniards and a Turkish citizen believed responsible for maintaining direct contact with the armed group.
Five of the nine were arrested in Madrid, three in the eastern port city of Valencia and one in northern Bilbao, the ministry said.
The statement said the police operation targeted the group’s recruiting and training structure. It said the suspects, in collaboration with people in other EU countries, helped transfer recruits to countries where they could join up with the PKK.
